COP30 marks the 30th meeting of the participants to the UNFCCC (UNFCCC), which serves as the overarching accord to the Paris climate deal. This significant conference is is set to occur in Belem, close to the estuary of the Amazon in Brazil.

Collaborative Gathering

Over recent Cops, host nations have adopted traditional gatherings based on local customs. This tradition started in 2011 in Durban, when representatives moved into special indaba meetings, named after a Zulu gathering. Subsequently, Cop28 in Dubai featured its majlis, and Cop29 in Baku included a Turkic chieftains' gathering.

At Cop30, delegates will be participate in a mutirão, a local expression originating from the native Tupi-Guarani that signifies a collective effort to work on a shared task.

Amazon Protection Initiative

Maintaining woodlands intact offers significantly more value to the world than cutting them down, but standard economics do not reflect this reality. Marginalized groups living in forested areas, along with the administrations of timber-rich states, often face challenges in preventing exploiting these natural assets for immediate benefits through deforestation, ranching or farmland development.

The Forest Protection Fund works to alter these economic incentives by offering compensation to nations and local groups to maintain forest cover. For the Brazilian leader, Lula, this is the primary focus for the upcoming conference. He aims the program could expand to a size of 125 billion dollars (£95bn), with $25 billion expected from industrialized nations and government agencies, while the remaining balance would be sourced from corporate funding and financial markets.
