The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
