The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Comes After Mixed Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news follows a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full text from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our fans.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. After some time of talks, Ben starts with us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Face the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every match. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Or aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an confirmed debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can anticipate further news as production continues.
