Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
