Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments is fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
