The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
