Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
